On May 25th, 2024 the Theta Iota Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. held the 13th Annual Senator Edward W. Brooke III Oratorical Scholarship Competition on the campus of Springfield College, in partnership with the Lee B. Revels Scholarship and Mentoring Foundation. The event was a resounding success, with this year’s topic: “With Liberty & Justice for All: How Have Supreme Court Decisions Over the Past Decade Impacted Communities of Color” showcasing the exceptional talent, eloquence, and leadership potential of high school students from the Greater Springfield area.
This annual competition seeks to honor the legacy of the late U.S. Senator, and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Edward W. Brooke III by providing a platform for young speakers to articulate their ideas, advocate for change, and inspire others through the power of oratory. The 2024 competition attracted diverse participants, each bringing their unique perspective and passion as they delivered speeches on wide ranging topics including social justice, environmental sustainability, and political activism. Their presentations captivated audiences and judges alike, demonstrating a depth of understanding, creativity, and persuasive ability beyond their years.
The success of the competition was also a testament to the expertise and dedication of the distinguished panel of judges, composed of esteemed educators, community leaders, and public figures, who had the challenging task of evaluating the speeches based on content, delivery, coherence, and relevance. After careful deliberation, the winners were Micheal Jones of Springfield International Charter School, who won first place, Zarek Caraballo of Discovery Polytech Early College High School, in second place, and Andrew Wilson of Springfield Honors Academy, who placed third. The winners received financial scholarship awards to assist in their pursuit of higher education and career development opportunities.
The commitment and engagement of the participants, judges, volunteers, and supporters of the competition stands as a testament to the lasting legacy of Senator Brooke and his faith in the ability of young people to create a better future. Preparations for next year’s Oratorical Competition are already in progress. Organizers from Theta Iota Lambda and the Revels Foundation are confident that the 2025 edition of the competition will be even more robust and continue to provide personal development and financial support opportunities to deserving Western Mass youths.
Information about registration, competition guidelines, and scholarship opportunities will be made publicly available later this year.
