Navigating the Aftermath of Election 2024

The day after the election, I found myself in a local diner, engaging in a heated debate with a group of men about why Kamala Harris should have been elected as the next President. I was baited with comments like, “She is not qualified!” “She was chosen as VP to secure the Black vote!” and “Wouldn’t you prefer a businessman as president over a lawyer? They lie for a living!” This conversation highlighted a troubling reality: the election of Donald Trump, whether embraced or met with apprehension, will leave many communities, who are already facing significant systemic challenges, grappling with disagreement, uncertainty, and discord. Friends and family members are increasingly divided. Co-workers will be judged in silence as racist, sexist, or homophobic. And the future of civil rights for young girls across the nation hangs in the balance. We must confront the reality that on January 20, 2025, Trump will return to the White House, and we must view this as an opportunity for dialogue, activism, and empowerment.

Investing time and resources in local elections can result in more diverse leadership and empower citizens to address the issues that matter most to their communities. Collaborative partnerships can significantly influence advocacy for policies that address the specific concerns of marginalized populations, ultimately fostering solidarity and reinforcing the idea that, despite political differences, common goals can be achieved. While I may not support the Republican approach to mass deportation or the rollback of women’s and civil rights, I can set aside these disagreements to support issues that transcend political memberships, such as public health, education, economic prosperity, and criminal justice reform.
Staying politically informed and engaged empowers communities to effect change. Individuals should join grassroots organizations that emphasize human rights, social justice, and equity and learn more about the political process, participate in peaceful protests, leverage social media to raise awareness about critical issues, and hold elected officials accountable. Throughout this period, we can remain vigilant activists.
I would be remiss not to acknowledge the emotional toll that the next four years may take on many individuals. In light of the anxiety stemming from the election, prioritizing mental health resources and support within the community is vital. Access to mental health services can identify and address issues, significantly enhancing quality of life by helping to manage stress, anxiety, and other mental health challenges.
Though the election of Trump may not have been the desired outcome for some, it presents an opportunity for growth, resilience, and action. Recognizing that change takes time is essential. The path toward change may not always be straight and will undoubtedly be slow. However, America is strong and resilient; we have always triumphed over adversity. By focusing on collaborative dialogue, political engagement, and mental health, we can embrace diverse perspectives and work toward a common goal. ■
