Charles Groce III attended Bloomfield High School and then received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1993 from the University of Connecticut, and received his Juris Doctorate from Western New England University School of Law in 1997.
After law school, Judge Groce served as an associate at the Law Office of Perman Glenn from 1997 to 1999. And then for 13 years Judge Groce did the very hard work of running his own private practice specializing in criminal defense and personal injury. In 2012 Judge Groce was appointed to the District Court by Governor Duval Patrick where he served until his appointment to Superior Court by Governor Maura T. Healey on May 8, 2025, at the State House in Boston, MA.
While serving as an Associate Justice in the District Court, Judge Groce served as the presiding justice of the Springfield Drug Court, where he and his team assisted and supervised treatment program participants. This remarkable program became known statewide and nationally with other courts using it as a model for their state. Judge Groce was also the first Justice of Westfield District Court.
In addition, Judge Groce has served as an adjunct professor at Western University School of Law where he received their first Alumni Community Excellence Award and is currently teaching at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
The swearing in of a judge is a function of the Executive Branch of Government which happens before the induction and installation of a judge which is a function of the Superior Court, the great Trial Court of the Commonwealth. Judge Groce is 486th Justice of the Superior Court.
