Building Community for All Nursing Students

One of the most impactful aspects of my nursing school journey has been the warm welcome I received as a new student nurse member of the Western Massachusetts Black Nurses Association. I now have the privilege of serving as the organization’s secretary. Participating in a professional nursing community, I was exposed to avenues that would challenge me, strengthen my clinical skills, and root me in meaningful work in our communities. Rather than simply offering connection, this organization broadened my vision of what nursing could look like and helped me understand the depth of responsibility and purpose I could carry as I step into this profession.
This support felt especially significant considering the qualifications new graduate nursing positions may require or strongly suggest in the hiring process. Recent research highlights that graduate nurses are entering a workforce shaped by global instability, health inequities, and increasingly complex patient needs (Fields et al., 2023). With limited time for mentorship and stretch opportunities, I was blessed to find a group of women that bridged that gap for me. Being in proximity to excelling black female educators and preceptors inspired me to envision myself stepping into similar opportunities in the future, and/or creating accessible spaces for other graduates.
My involvement deepened when I was elected to serve as the organization’s secretary, a milestone that prompted me to reflect on how nursing students can make meaningful contributions even before becoming a licensed nurse. Although each of our nursing school journeys may look different, we are united by a shared purpose: to care for and heal our communities.
Becoming part of this nursing organization not only supported me but also shaped me. It gave me confidence, clarity, and leadership skills that serve me every day. As I embark on my nursing career, I carry with me the empowerment, discipline, and sense of purpose that my WMBNA community instilled in me. One day, I hope to empower the next generation of nurses in the same way.
