Each year, as we gather to honor the life and enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we are reminded of his unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and peace. In a time when political and social divisions are more pronounced than ever, this celebration stands as a powerful reminder of the work we must continue inspired by Dr. King—an unwavering pursuit of justice tempered with his commitment to nonviolence and peace.
MLK Day has always been a call to action—offering opportunities for reflection, connection, and mobilization as we acknowledge how far we’ve come and confront the work still ahead. In this current political climate, marked by increased polarization and threats to the progress we have made, it’s more important than ever to come together as a community to reaffirm our collective responsibility to continue Dr. King’s work.

The Theme: Pursue Justice.
Persist in Peace.
This year’s theme, “Pursue Justice. Persist in Peace,” captures the essence of Dr. King’s philosophy and provides a framework for how we are to approach the myriads of challenges that persist today. At its core, this theme encourages us to actively pursue justice in all forms—whether it’s fighting for racial equality, addressing economic disparities, or advocating for access to basic human rights. It also emphasizes persistence—the understanding that lasting change does not happen overnight. As Dr. King reminded us, “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” To this end, it is essential that we strategize our collective fight for justice, amidst uncertainty.
Dr. King’s teachings also insist that we do so with peace and Kingian Nonviolence illuminating our pathway onward. In a world riddled with blatant discrimination and ever erupting tensions, we are called to be the antidote to divisiveness, through unifying efforts, understanding, empathy, and peaceful protest. “Persist in Peace” reminds us that in our pursuit of justice, we must also remain committed to peaceful means—seeking reconciliation, understanding, and healing in the face of adversity.

Celebrating Unity Through
Music and Art
Music and art have long been central to Dr. King’s message, as powerful tools for healing and connection. It is a reminder that our pursuit of justice should never come at the cost of our shared humanity. Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community” calls on us to embrace diversity and work toward reconciliation, and this celebration will embody that vision through dynamic intergenerational performances and shared artistry that inspire hope, foster unity, and encourage action.
The event will take place on Monday, January 20, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA. Our community welcome begins with artistic expressions, exhibitions, and vendors in the lobby entrance followed by an awe-inspiring purpose driven program where nearly 1,000 youth and supporting adult participants will manifest our theme through inspiring spoken word, dance & music presentations featuring MLK Charter School of Excellence, Martin Luther King Jr. Family Services’ Youth & Clemente Program, Community Music School of Springfield’s Sonido Musica, String City, African Drumming, Springfield CommUnity Chorale, Young at Heart Chorus, Springfield Public Schools students, and more.
This year’s MLK Day Community Celebration is made possible by a dedicated group of community collaborators who share Dr. King’s vision of unity, service, and social change. Local organizations, businesses, and civic leaders have joined forces to ensure that this event is impactful and meaningful for all attendees.
Our community coalition of organizations include Community Music School of Springfield, D.R.E.A.M. Studios, Inclusive Strategies, Legacy Sounds, Martin Luther King Jr. Family Services, Martin Luther King Jr. Charter School of Excellence, Springfield College, Springfield Public Schools, Springfield Cultural Partnership, Urban League of Springfield and Young At Heart Chorus, who are all working in unity together to ensure this is a memorable community experience.
This collaboration demonstrates the power of coming together, transcending boundaries, and working toward the common goal of justice with and for our Beloved Community. Join us on January 20th at MassMutual Center and share the invitation with your friends, family, and colleagues for what is sure to be a powerfully demonstrative and unifying Day On, Together! Let’s show the world what persisting in peace looks like in the 4-1-3.
