LaTonia Monroe Naylor, Member of the School Committee, Host Press Conference in Response to Disparaging Remarks of School Officials
When: Thursday, June 6, 2024
Time: 10:15 a.m.
Location: Springfield City Hall, School Committee Chambers (2ndFloor)
(Springfield, Massachusetts – June 5, 2024) It has been brought to my attention that two leaders of the Springfield Public Schools, Superintendent Daniel J. Warwick and Lead Chief Schools Officer Kimberly Wells, made disparaging remarks about me, LaTonia Monroe Naylor, an At-large member of the Springfield School Committee. These comments have gone viral on social media. I am deeply disturbed and saddened by this development, as I have sought to work collaboratively with both individuals over the past seven years. The language used is unprofessional and wholly unacceptable for individuals in positions of authority responsible for the education and well-being of all our children.
As a community leader and advocate for our students and educators, I firmly believe that mutual respect and integrity are foundational to our educational system. The comments made by the Superintendent and Lead Schools Officer undermine these values and the trust placed in our educational leadership, especially in a district where nearly 70% of the students are Latino and 16% are Black. It is absolutely deplorable for statements such as “it was gross” or “ridiculous” to describe a high school graduation or “another crazy Monroe” to describe a 5th-grade student who accidentally selected the wrong school to be made by individuals charged with defending and uplifting our motto of “a culture of equity and proficiency.”
Even with my family being called “scumbags,” “thieves,” or “crazy,” and my credentials being called into question, I want to assure the public and my fellow committee members that I remain committed to our primary mission: providing a safe, inclusive, and high-quality education for all students in Springfield. This incident will not deter me from continuing to advocate for all our students, parents, and educators.
To those who have expressed their support and concern, I am grateful for your solidarity. We must address this matter transparently and ensure that such behavior is not tolerated within our school system.
Moving forward, I will work with my family and colleagues on the School Committee to address this incident appropriately and reinforce the standards of professionalism and respect we expect from our district’s leadership. I have faith that we will emerge stronger and more united in our commitment to serving our community.
I am reminded of the importance of faith and perseverance in times like these. I trust that God’s plan will ultimately prevail, and no negative actions or words can interfere with the blessings destined for those who are meant to receive them.
To discuss this matter further, a press conference will be held tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. at Springfield City Hall.
Thank you for your attention and support.
Sincerely,
LaTonia Monroe Naylor, M.A, NMP
At-large Member, Springfield School Committee
