I really do hope that April showers will bring May flowers this month. I know that all mothers will love to see the flowers that are growing from the ground and the ones that they’re going to be seeing on their tables or desks on Mother’s Day.
This year it seems like we are in a chaotic season and probably will be for the next 3-1/2 years. But I need to let everyone know that we are not alone. And we are not standing by and letting things happen. Just like all mothers, we do what we have to do to make sure things get done. And I know that in this country and in this city, we have more people who believe in social justice than those who don’t. I don’t want us to get distracted by the rhetoric and by how this chaotic administration is putting things out and hiding things.
I want to focus on continuing to be good to each other and continuing to find the good in each other. I always say that everyone in this country, no matter what side of the aisle they are on, wants the same thing. We want to live a good life, raise good children and be relatively happy. We have things that we go through in this life, like losing children and losing friends and other family members, and we keep moving forward.
So, for those of you out there who think that we are just letting things happen, we aren’t. We are going to resist, and we are going to protest, and we are going to do something to make sure that we are looking out for each other. If it’s boycotting these big corporations who take advantage of us and take our money but don’t want us, that’s what we do. If it’s calling our congressmen and representatives in Washington, DC and telling them what it is that they should be doing, because they work for “we the people”, that’s what we’re doing.
So, in this month of May when we celebrate mothers, I encourage us all to continue to support small, local businesses, especially black and brown businesses. I am continuing to boycott Walmart, Target and Amazon, although the last one, I will use very sparingly.
I wish all of you mothers and mother figures out there a Happy Mother’s Day and remember to Resist! ■
