The Springfield Museums Offer a Week-Long Celebration of Animation

Get Animated: February School Vacation Week Family Fun

Monday, February 19-Friday, February 23, 2024

Springfield (MA)— Mark your calendars now to visit the Springfield Museums during school vacation week (Feb 19-23), where you can Get Animated with family-friendly and fun activities that emphasize the wonder of Animationland. Free with museum admission. 

“We will explore the science of sound, illusions, and illustration – all tied into our Animationland exhibit,” says Family Engagement Coordinator Abby Garner. “We are also very excited to have Olive Tree Books-n-Voices return for a book fair on Monday from 11am-2pm and a Tanglewood Marionettes performance on Wednesday at 1:30pm in Davis Auditorium.”

Daily Features

Spark!Lab, 10:30 am-4 pm: Automata — an early robotics toy featuring moving scenes and characters. Design your own figure and use a hand crank to bring it to life! Also explore zoetropes. Second Floor, Springfield Science Museum

Try Your Eye, 11 am-3 pm: Play with optical illusions—the base of animation. African Hall, First Floor, Springfield Science Museum

The Science of Sound, 11 am-3 pm: How do we hear? Learn about the science of sound with a variety of hands-on activities. Science Workshop, Second Floor, Springfield Science Museum

Be An Illustrator, 11 am-3 pm: Design a comic strip or flip book to tell a tale of your favorite character or one of your own creation. Discovery Lab, Lower Level, Springfield Science Museum

Jumping Frog, 12-4 pm: Using the Japanese art of paper folding, create a jumping frog! Art Discovery Center, Second Floor, GWV Smith Art Museum

Animationland is presented in collaboration with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry.

THE SPRINGFIELD MUSEUMS are located on the Quadrangle at 21 Edwards Street in the heart of downtown Springfield, Massachusetts. The nationally accredited and Smithsonian-affiliated consortium of museums includes the Springfield Science Museum, the Michele and Donald D’Amour Museum of Fine Arts, the Lyman and Merrie Wood Museum of Springfield History, the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, and the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum, the first and only museum dedicated to the beloved children’s book author and Springfield native.

Smoked BBQ @ the Blake House Café

Tuesday-Sunday 11am-3:30pm.

Smoked, the 413’s BBQ food trailer, is now serving in The Blake House Café! In addition to the barbecue fare of the day, soups, salads, and sandwiches, coffee, tea, pastry, and muffins are also available. Check out the daily menu at the Café and in the Welcome Center.
