Happy Mother’s Day!

Let me begin by saying, “Happy Mother’s Day” to all the mothers worldwide. We deserve a day. We deserve more than one day. So why not give us the whole month of May? It’s a good month to celebrate mothers. Nice spring weather abounds and beautiful flowers are blooming everywhere. Spring is the perfect season to highlight the beauty that represents mothers. That’s a great thought but it won’t go over very well with everyone. However, I’m sure mothers would appreciate a whole month devoted to them. I know I would. How about Mother’s Day weekend? Just a thought.
I think mothers don’t get enough credit or recognition for what they do and go through for their children. Aside from God’s love, a mother’s love is the greatest love on earth. It resembles God’s love in many ways. It is sacrificial, unconditional, long-suffering, and many other adjectives found in the English language.
A mother’s love never changes, and it never fails. Even when our children don’t turn out how we hoped and prayed they would, a mother’s love prevails. There may be someone who is reading this who doesn’t remember their mother in that way.
That’s because no one is perfect, and some mothers have been victims of life’s hardships or made some bad decisions. They’ve experienced abuse or poverty or neglect or addictions that may have prevented them from being able to love and nurture their children. Some of us may never have the title of a “good mother” but we thank God for Jesus, who died so we can be forgiven for our mistakes and sins. Therefore, we must forgive those mothers and pray for them. So if you have or had a mother who loved you and did her best for you, you should celebrate her. You don’t know how many nights she stayed up with you all night when you were a sick baby.
You don’t know how many sleepless nights she spent lying awake, praying until she heard your key in the door, knowing you had made it home safely. You didn’t see her agony as they accused you and threw you to the ground while she prayed they didn’t shoot you. They hand-cuffed you and locked you behind bars as she raced against time to get bail money to get you out, guilty or not. She felt your pain when you called her to say you were beaten up by the man who vowed to love and cherish you, and she told you to come home.
Your mother may not be perfect but she has always been there. Just as Mother Mary was there, looking on in agony as her Son was accused, beaten, tortured, and sentenced to death because He loved us so much that He decided to give His life to save us.
A mother’s love is so much like God’s love—Happy Mother’s Day to all Mothers, those on earth and those now in Heaven. ■
