Meet Springfield Public Schools’ New Superintendent: Dr. Sonia Dinnall

I am proud and honored to serve as Superintendent of Springfield Public Schools, the best school district in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As a product of Mary A. Dryden Veterans Memorial School, Arthur T. Talmadge Elementary, Warner Elementary, M. Marcus Kiley Junior High, and Classical High School, I am living testament to the excellent education our students receive. As a lifelong resident of our beautiful city and an employee of Springfield Public Schools for 23 years, my commitment to serving our learning community remains steadfast.
My goal is to build upon our district’s legacy of academic success. I began by listening—listening mindfully to hundreds of educators, administrators, staff, students, families, and community stakeholders. Their insights have helped me understand our district’s strengths, opportunities for growth, and areas of need. We have much to celebrate. Our leaders, educators, and staff are hardworking professionals who care deeply. Children are our most precious gift, and our students shine with curious minds and boundless energy. As superintendent, I am motivated by the desire to ensure that they receive an unparalleled, world-class education.
Yet there is much work to be done to ensure that we level the playing field, champion equity, and mitigate barriers to empower our students to achieve their greatest goals and their biggest dreams.
My Transition Plan consists of three phases: repair, restore, and review; revise and redesign; and empower to excel and accelerate. I invite you to track my progress with the Superintendent’s Transition Plan Tracker, now available on the Springfield Public Schools website, where you can monitor each action step.
In closing, I want to recognize Balliet and Boland elementary schools, recently named Schools of Recognition by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Their growth reflects the acceleration we aim to replicate across the district. I also want to draw attention to our recent launch of the “Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow” campaign to stress the vital link between consistent attendance and academic success.
Together, we can uplift our entire community, and I look forward to continuing this journey to make Springfield Public Schools a model of excellence in Massachusetts and beyond. ■
