On September 29, 2025, Mt. Zion Baptist Church reached a milestone as they paid off a 20-year mortgage in less than nine years. On December 7, 2025, the Church celebrated this extraordinary accomplishment, which stands as a testament to the congregation’s dedication, prudent stewardship, and collective faith. It is more than a financial triumph; it is a powerful symbol of what unified purpose and commitment can achieve.
Since October 2016, Mt. Zion Baptist Church has invested an impressive $2.15 million in the acquisition of and structural improvements to the former Dunbar Community Center building, which is now named Mt. Zion Baptist Church/The Dunbar Center. These enhancements have created welcoming and functional spaces for worship, learning, and community gathering. Each dollar reflects a commitment to strengthening the church’s foundation and ensuring its doors remain open for generations to come. The investment has not only revitalized the physical space but has also elevated the church’s capacity to serve the community.
Mt. Zion’s impact extends far beyond its walls. They have partnered with over 70 different organizations to bring needed programming, resources, and opportunities.
Mt. Zion and The Dunbar Center are home to a diverse range of programs designed to uplift and empower. A shining example of Mt. Zion’s community commitment is The Dunbar’s collaboration with the Food Bank of Western Mass and the Springfield Urban League. In a powerful demonstration of service, this partnership provides groceries to over 700 households each month. The impact of this initiative is seen in the faces of neighbors who receive not just food, but renewed hope and dignity.
The YWCA offers supervised visitation services, ensuring safe family connections. Veterans find dedicated support tailored to their needs. Youth and adults alike discover new passions through competitive cheerleading, creative writing workshops, and interpretive dance classes as well as sports programming. These offerings create a place where every person can learn, grow, and thrive.
Mt. Zion Baptist Church and The Dunbar Center operate seven days a week, underscoring the unwavering commitment to accessibility and service. The Dunbar Center remains open to additional partnerships to enhance the community.
In his 15 years of service to the congregation, Dr. Atu White believes the true victory lies in its enduring dedication to community enrichment and collaboration. With strong partnerships, visionary investments, and a compassionate spirit, Mt. Zion Baptist Church continues to be a place of healing, help, and hope! ■
