The Hartford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) presents a powerful musical experience featuring Grammy-winning composer and jazz trumpeter, Terence Blanchard. As part of the 2024-2025 Masterworks Series, this special concert takes place on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 8 PM at The Bushnell in Hartford.
Blanchard, a celebrated jazz trumpeter and composer, will be joined by his band, the E-Collective, soprano Janinah Burnett, and Grammy-winning baritone Will Liverman. The program features a concert suite of arias and excerpts from Blanchard’s groundbreaking opera Fire Shut Up in My Bones, the first opera by a Black composer performed at the Metropolitan Opera and based on the memoir, Fire Shut Up in My Bones, by Charles Blow.
Also included are suites from Blanchard’s acclaimed film scores, including Malcolm X, Harriet, and BlacKkKlansman. Conducted by HSO Music Director Carolyn Kuan, the performance is enhanced by striking video projections by Andrew F. Scott and Matthew Unkenholz, creating an immersive experience.
