On November 4, 2025, Tracye Whitfield was re-elected to the City Council to an at-large seat by the voters of Springfield, Massachusetts and the following day, she secured the seven votes needed to become the next President of that body, marking a historic moment for the city of Springfield.
Once officially elected by her colleagues on January 5, 2026, at the formal election and swearing-in ceremony at the City Council’s organizational meeting to be held at 10:00 a.m. at City Hall, Tracye will become the first woman of color to hold the position of City Council President in Springfield’s history.
Her leadership bid was supported by Councilors Malo Brown, Lavar Click-Bruce, Zaida Govan, Justin Hurst, Gerry Martin, Kateri Walsh and, of course, Tracye Whitfield herself. Their collective
vision centers on collaboration, transparency, and continued progress for all Springfield residents.
“I am deeply honored and humbled by the trust my colleagues have placed in me,” said Tracye. “This moment isn’t just about me — it’s about representation, leadership, and ensuring every voice in Springfield is heard. I’m ready to lead with integrity, unity, and purpose.”
As City Council President, Tracye plans to prioritize equity, public safety, economic development, and neighborhood investment — continuing her long-standing commitment to inclusive growth and community empowerment.
In her statement to POV printed in our October 1st issue, Tracye answered the question, “Describe Your Plans for the future of the City,” that we posed to all of the city council candidates as follows:
“As Executive Director of the Coalition for an Equitable Economy (CEE), I have dedicated my career to advancing systems change that gives small businesses, innovative start-ups, and emerging developers the opportunity to sustain, grow, and thrive. By creating new pathways for access to capital and support, I work every day to strengthen the foundation of our local economy.
“My commitment to community safety runs deep. As Chair of the Mason Square C3 for over 10 years, I have partnered with law enforcement and residents to protect our seniors, children, and families —ensuring Springfield remains a safe and welcoming place for all.
“In addition to my work with CEE, I proudly serve as Vice President of the Springfield City Council, where I continue to advocate for policies that expand opportunity, strengthen neighborhoods, and give every resident a voice in shaping our city’s future.
“I also believe in building the next generation of leaders. By inviting young people and rising voices to participate in event planning and lead panel discussions, I create space for them to grow their confidence, leadership, and civic responsibility.
“Beyond this, I serve on the Springfield Housing Trust Advisory Board, where I focus on reducing homelessness and expanding affordable housing options. I am equally committed to second chances, which is why I champion the Clean Slate Initiative—because everyone deserves the opportunity to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to society after incarceration.”
CONGRATULATIONS, Tracye. You deserve this honor and this trust of your colleagues. We wish you well!
