University of Massachusetts Amherst has selected Charles Walker-Hoover, a graduating undergraduate, as one of its 2026 21st Century Leaders, a distinction recognizing students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, academic achievement, and commitment to community impact.
Explained UMass President Marty Meehan, “The 21st Century Leader Awards, proudly underwritten by the University of Massachusetts Amherst Alumni Association, recognize a group of our most exceptional graduating seniors.” Ten awards were presented at the graduation.
Walker-Hoover, a student leader deeply engaged in campus and civic life, has contributed to initiatives focused on student advocacy, racial justice, and institutional equity. His leadership has included roles in student government and campus organizations, where he has worked to advance inclusion, representation, and student voice.
He was specifically recognized “for a commitment to public leadership—serving as an SGA (Student Government Association) Senator, president of the UMass NAACP, and Congressional Black Caucus foundation intern—and for research on and dedication to racial justice.”
A proud native of Springfield, Massachusetts, Walker-Hoover dedicated the recognition to his hometown and family, emphasizing the importance of community roots in shaping his journey.
“This honor reflects not only my journey, but the communities (Springfield) that raised me,” he said. “I want to extend a heartfelt message to all the young boys and girls out there, reminding them that they have the power to achieve anything they set their minds to. Your stories matter, and you have the potential to make the world a better place!”
Walker-Hoover also dedicated the award to his late mother, acknowledging her influence, sacrifices, and continued inspiration throughout his academic career.
The 21st Century Leaders recognition is awarded annually at commencement to a select group of graduating seniors who have demonstrated outstanding leadership and service during their time at UMass Amherst. ■
